As for the issues that will be discussed these days in the Assembly sessions, Rifai highlighted, among others, the debate on sustainable tourism, the draft Convention to establish uniform standards to ensure and promote an appropriate degree of protection for tourists and the clarification of rights and obligations of tourism service providers.

He also emphasized the election of the new secretary general of the organization, whose appointment is recommended by the UNWTO executive council and will be submitted tomorrow for ratification by the Assembly.

The council has proposed the ambassador of Georgia in Spain, Zurab Pololikashvili, 40, after a vote of its member states that took place during a meeting last May in Madrid.

In the face of criticism of alleged irregularities in the election process Pololikashvili broadcast by some media, Rifai defended today that it was "clean, transparent and flawless at 100%."
