Brussels, November 20 (EFE) .- The representatives of the Twenty-eight in agricultural affairs today gave the green light to a new agreement to renew the rules on organic production and its labeling, a regulation that aims to modernize and standardize this type of agriculture throughout the European Union (EU).

The Special Committee on Agriculture, formed by representatives of the Twenty-eight European countries on issues of agriculture and fisheries, decided at their meeting today to endorse the provisional agreement that had already been reached with the European Parliament last 28 of June, the EU Council said in a statement.

This update gives rise to a "more modern and uniform" regulation at Community level with a view to promoting the sustainable development of organic production in all European countries, according to the Council.

In addition, the new rules aim to ensure fair competition for farmers and operators, prevent fraud and unfair practices and improve consumer confidence in organic products.

For the agreement between vigor, the spokesperson of the Special Committee on Agriculture will send a letter to the president of the Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament, noting that, if the Parliament accepts without amendment the text approved today, the Ministers of Agriculture of the Twenty-eight will do the same in their next meeting.

The new rules will take effect from January 1, 2021.
