Cayo Coco damaged by Irma reopens over the sea

The road over the sea that connects the tourist resort of Cayo Coco with mainland was repaired and reopened less than 72 hours after the passage of mighty Hurricane Irma, which devastated facilities of the northern Cuban coast and affected about 23 kilometers of that access road.

Havana, Sep 13 (EFE) .- The road over the sea that connects the tourist center of Cayo Coco with the mainland was repaired and reopened less than 72 hours after the passage of the powerful hurricane Irma, which devastated the facilities of the northern Cuban coast and affected about 23 kilometers of that access.

The "pedraplén", located in the north of the central province of Ciego de Avila, is open to the circulation of vehicles, "always with extreme precautions while continuing work in the affected areas," said a note from the state Granma newspaper.

On Friday night, Irma hit that area of the island with category 5 hurricane winds on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and destroyed the Jardines del Rey airport and the tourist facilities of the cays Coco, Guillermo and Santa María, the latter in the province of Villa Clara.

In the road that connects the Avilanian cayería with the locality of Turiguanó (Ciego de Ávila) - also seriously affected - the hurricane damaged rocks and other elements in 23 of the 35 kilometers of the road, undermined 11 bridges and raised the pavement in some points of the road, inaugurated 26 of July of 1988.

At this moment, Granma specifies, work is being done on repairs to the accesses to Cayo Guillermo, Islet Paredón Grande and the famous Pilar beach, a stretch of almost virgin coastline, which has been included more than once among the most beautiful in the world by prestigious travel publications.

In spite of the hotels and other facilities of the northern cayería, in a message to Cubans President Raúl Castro assured that they will be recovered "before the beginning of high season" in November.

The Ignacio Agramonte international airport in the eastern city of Camagüey has also resumed operations, the state-run Cuban News Agency reported.

Tourism is the second source of foreign exchange for Cuba, only behind the export of professional services.

Hurricane Irma left 10 dead on the island and serious housing and the national electricity system, which has not yet been fully restored, so many areas of the country remain without water or electricity since last Friday.
